A good set of dumbbells is versatile, compact and suitable for many exercises. They take up little space and allow you to train your entire body. Ideal for home and the gym. Think of exercises for your biceps, triceps, shoulders, chest, back or legs: with a pair of dumbbells, you won't miss a single muscle group. Thanks to their rubber coating, these dumbbells can take a beating and last for years.
More than just muscle strength
A machine guides the movement for you; a dumbbell does not. Your body has to balance the weight itself, engaging not only your target muscles but also your stabilizing muscles. This builds strength, control and coordination at the same time. That makes dumbbell training functional and effective, whether you train for more strength, a fitter body or injury prevention.
Hex dumbbells are also excellent for full-body conditioning exercises. Combine dumbbell thrusters, dumbbell burpees (devil presses) or dumbbell snatches with high reps and short rests. Your heart rate shoots up and your fitness improves too. Thanks to their hexagonal shape, they do not roll away. Put them down, pick them up and keep going, without wasting time between reps.
Which weight should you choose?
The right dumbbell weight depends on your training level and the exercise you want to do. Always follow this rule of thumb: you should just be able to perform the last two to three reps of your set with good technique.
General guideline by level:
- Beginner/rehabilitation: dumbbells from 1 to 10 kg are a logical starting point for light exercises (for example, for your shoulders), rehabilitation and athletes who are just starting strength training.
- Recreational athletes: dumbbells from 5 to 20 kg are suitable for most basic strength and conditioning exercises.
- Advanced athletes: dumbbells from 20 to 50 kg are suitable for the heaviest compound exercises and advanced strength athletes focused on building muscle mass.

Frequently asked questions about dumbbells
Which dumbbells do I need as a beginner?
For beginners, a 1-10 kg set is usually ideal. Start with a light weight and focus on technique before training heavier.
Are adjustable dumbbells better than fixed dumbbells?
That depends on your training. Adjustable dumbbells save space, while fixed dumbbells are more robust and quicker to use.
How heavy should I train with dumbbells?
Train heavy enough to challenge your muscles, but not so heavy that your form suffers. For hypertrophy (muscle growth), you are usually good between 8-12 repetitions.
Can I do a full-body workout with just dumbbells?
Sure! With the right exercises, you can train your entire body with just a few dumbbells.
